You may then print out and complete the membership or renewal form and send it to the address on the form. Prospective club members are encouraged to attend the monthly club meetings (aka Ruddergate’s). Newcomers to the hobby are especially encouraged to make early contact, since advice from experienced members is very helpful in making a wise selection of initial planes and equipment.
S.A.M. is an Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Charter club. As such, we require all members to also be current members of the AMA. A link to the AMA membership page is referenced below. With the growth of the drone market the FAA has recommended and required some additional items, which SAM also requires. These are the FAA Drone Registration and TRUST Test Authorization Token. They are available via the FAA’s Drone Zone website, which is referenced below. Once you setup your online account at the Drone Zone website, you will be able to register an aircraft (considered a drone in the eye’s of the FAA) as a recreational flyer, this will get your registration number. This registration is good for 3 years and has minimal cost ($5 in 2022). You will also find the TRUST test information inside the Drone Zone website, but the FAA does not administer the online test. The test can be taken via the AMA, who is an approved test administrator. Link to the TRUST test is also below. After taking the online TRUST Test you’ll be given an “authorization token” which you should save for future reference.

Piloting a model aircraft can be one of the most challenging and rewarding of skills. As with any worthwhile endeavor, quality equipment and instruction is essential. Model airplanes are not toys and may be dangerous if handled and flown improperly. If you already have an airplane, call us or bring it out to the field so that we can check it out and get you started in training. If you do not yet have an airplane, call us or come out to the field and we can help you to select the right equipment. Better yet, make an appointment to receive your first lesson using one of our training aircraft. Salinas Area Modelers offers flight instruction free of charge to anyone interested in learning to fly.
